New Government Water Heater Regulations for 2015

What are these new regulations?

Xed out H2O heaterThey are part of The National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA) that was approved by Congress and is administered by the US Department of Energy (DOE). All water heaters manufactured after April 16th, 2015 must conform to new energy efficiency standards. These standards call for a mandatory increase of 3% -30% in energy efficiency over current water heater models. Details can be found here on the Department of Energy website.

AOSmith Heater HawnThese new NAECA compliant water heating systems are projected to save the average household up to $365 per year in energy bills.  At Hawn we are already offering water heaters that meet and exceed these new regulations from our trusted family of suppliers. These new units are not only more energy efficient but will only further increase your home's comfort!

Unlike the energy standards for light bulbs where the new high efficiency bulbs screw into the old sockets, the new higher efficiency water heaters will be larger and many times require additional components with more involved installations.  The following could be the result:

  • More Space Will Be Required - in most cases the new NAECA compliant units will only be a couple of inches taller and wider. For some home owners this may be an issue if there is limited space where the present water heater is located. New and larger venting will also be required for certain gas water heaters.
  • The New Units Will Cost More - due to the retooling costs for manufacturers and increased material costs for added insulation but this investment is projected to save the average home owner up to $365 a year.
  • Custom Installation May Be Required - many homes and apartments may need unique installation plans to accommodate the new water heater systems especially when a smaller capacity tank is used. If this is your situation Hawn has the professionals and experience to make it happen.
  • Certain Larger Capacity Tanks Will Be Discontinued - some larger size electric (66 or 80 gallon) and gas water heaters (75 gallon) are being discontinued.  Replacement models for these are not available yet.
